BMI Calculator: Indian Chart, Formula and Healthy Range

Dr. Ananya Sharma October 3, 2026 6 views

A BMI Calculator turns your height and weight into one number called Body Mass Index. Doctors in India use that number as a first check for underweight, healthy weight, overweight and obesity. This guide shows the Indian BMI chart, the formula behind every BMI Calculator, and what to do after you see your result.

If you want the number right now, use the free BMI Calculator on Nirog Lab. Enter height and weight. The result uses WHO Asia-Pacific ranges made for Indian and other South Asian adults, not the higher Western cut-offs.

For Indian adults, a healthy BMI is 18.5 to 22.9. A BMI of 23 or above is overweight on the Asia-Pacific scale, and 25 or above is obese.

What a BMI Calculator measures

Body Mass Index compares weight with height. It does not scan body fat, muscle or where fat sits on the body. It is a screening number. A clinic visit, waist measurement and blood tests complete the picture.

The BMI Calculator is useful because the same formula works for most adults, the result is instant, and you can repeat it every month to see a trend. Daily checks are less useful. Weight moves with water, salt and meal timing.

BMI Calculator formula

Every BMI Calculator uses the same equation:

BMI = weight (kg) ÷ height (m) × height (m)

Height must be in metres. Divide centimetres by 100. A person who is 170 cm tall is 1.70 m. Square that height, then divide weight by the result.

Worked example

  • Height: 170 cm = 1.70 m
  • Height squared: 1.70 × 1.70 = 2.89
  • Weight: 70 kg
  • BMI: 70 ÷ 2.89 = 24.2

On the Indian chart, 24.2 is overweight. On the older Western chart, the same 24.2 still sits in the normal band, because that chart only marks overweight at 25. This gap is why an India-specific BMI Calculator matters.

Skip the manual maths and run the same sum in the free BMI Calculator. It also shows the healthy weight band for the height you enter.

BMI Calculator chart for Indian adults

WHO Asia-Pacific cut-offs are lower because South Asians develop diabetes, high blood pressure and heart risk at a lower BMI than many European populations. Nirog Lab’s BMI Calculator follows this scale.

Category BMI What it suggests
Underweight Below 18.5 Possible low energy reserves and nutrient gaps
Normal weight 18.5 – 22.9 Healthy range for Indian adults
Overweight 23.0 – 24.9 Higher metabolic risk; time to adjust food and activity
Obese Class I 25.0 – 29.9 Raised risk of diabetes, blood pressure and fatty liver
Obese Class II 30.0 and above Medical guidance is the right next step

The international WHO chart still labels 25.0–29.9 as overweight and 30+ as obese. Use the Asia-Pacific rows above when you read a BMI Calculator result for an Indian adult.

Healthy weight by height

This table is the weight band for BMI 18.5 to 22.9. It is the same range the BMI Calculator shows as ideal weight.

Height Healthy weight
150 cm (4 ft 11 in) 41.6 – 51.5 kg
155 cm (5 ft 1 in) 44.4 – 55.0 kg
160 cm (5 ft 3 in) 47.4 – 58.6 kg
165 cm (5 ft 5 in) 50.4 – 62.3 kg
170 cm (5 ft 7 in) 53.5 – 66.2 kg
175 cm (5 ft 9 in) 56.7 – 70.1 kg
180 cm (5 ft 11 in) 59.9 – 74.2 kg

How to use the BMI Calculator

  • Measure height without shoes, in centimetres.
  • Weigh yourself in the morning, after using the toilet, before breakfast.
  • Enter both values in the BMI Calculator and note the category.
  • Repeat once a month. Track the trend, not a single day.
  • Add waist size. For Indian adults, a waist above 90 cm in men or 80 cm in women adds risk even when BMI looks moderate.

When a BMI Calculator can mislead

BMI is a strong first screen for most adults. A few groups need a second measure.

  • Athletes and gym-trained adults. Muscle weighs more than fat, so BMI can look high while body fat stays low.
  • Pregnancy. Do not use a standard BMI Calculator to judge weight gain in pregnancy. Follow your obstetrician’s chart.
  • Children and teenagers. Adult cut-offs do not apply. Paediatric BMI uses age and growth charts.
  • Older adults. A BMI at the lower end of normal can sometimes signal frailty. A doctor should read the number with muscle strength and diet.
  • Very short or very tall adults. The formula is less precise at the extremes of height.

What your BMI Calculator result means for health

In Indian adults, risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, fatty liver and sleep apnea rises once BMI crosses 23, and it rises faster above 25. A number in the normal band is reassuring. It does not replace blood sugar, lipids or blood pressure checks.

If the result is underweight, look at meals, protein and any ongoing illness before trying to gain fast. If it is overweight or obese, a steady change in food, daily walking and sleep beats a crash diet. Aim for habits you can keep for months.

How often to check BMI

Once a month is enough for most adults. Check sooner if a clinician has asked you to monitor weight, or if you have started a structured nutrition plan. Write down the date, weight and BMI so the next check has a baseline.

BMI Calculator questions people ask

What is a good BMI in India?

For adults, 18.5 to 22.9 is the healthy band on the WHO Asia-Pacific chart used by this BMI Calculator.

Is a free BMI Calculator accurate?

The maths is accurate when height and weight are accurate. The limit is the method itself: BMI does not measure fat percentage. Pair it with waist circumference.

Is BMI the same for men and women?

The adult formula and the Indian category cut-offs are the same. Body fat percentage at the same BMI is often higher in women, so waist size still helps.

Which BMI Calculator should I trust?

Use one that states the Indian or Asia-Pacific ranges. A calculator that marks overweight only at 25 will understate risk for many Indian adults. The Nirog Lab BMI Calculator uses 23 and 25 as the overweight and obese thresholds.

This article is general health information. It is not a diagnosis or a treatment plan. If your BMI is outside 18.5–22.9, or you have diabetes, thyroid disease, PCOS or heart disease, discuss the result with a qualified doctor.
